BUCKINGHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — A tragic accident occurred over the weekend at Holicong Middle School, where a 58-year-old roofing contractor fell approximately 30 feet to his death.
Emergency responders from Buckingham Township Police, EMS, and the Bucks County Coroner’s Office arrived on the scene shortly after a 911 call was made around 4 p.m. on Saturday. The worker, identified as Jose Morales of Adelphi, Maryland, was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m. by the coroner’s office.
An autopsy conducted by Bucks County Coroner Patti Campi determined the cause of death to be blunt impact injuries, and the death was ruled accidental.
Morales had been working for a contractor hired to complete roofing work at the school. According to a statement from the Central Bucks School District, the incident involved only the individual worker and posed no danger to students or staff.
“It was a single-person accident. No district staff or students were involved, and there was no risk to school personnel or children,” said district spokesperson Mike Petitti. “The district shares our deepest sympathies with the individual’s family.”
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified and is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Impact of Workplace Injuries in Pennsylvania
Workplace injuries and fatalities have a profound impact on Pennsylvania communities, both emotionally and economically. When an accident occurs—whether involving slips, falls, machinery malfunctions, or vehicle incidents—it reverberates through families and co-workers, often leading to lasting trauma or financial hardship. Workers’ compensation may help cover medical expenses and lost wages, but these benefits frequently fall short of replacing full income or addressing emotional suffering. Small businesses, commonly found in Pennsylvania’s manufacturing, agriculture, and construction sectors, can be hit hard by these incidents, facing increased insurance premiums, operational delays, and potential regulatory scrutiny.
Beyond the immediate aftermath, recurring workplace accidents can erode trust in safety standards and employer responsibility, affecting employee morale and retention. In industries such as construction and heavy manufacturing—which dominate the state’s employment landscape—employer-led efforts like enhanced training, regular safety audits, and open reporting systems are crucial. When companies take safety seriously, it shows up not only in lower incident rates but also in higher productivity, reduced legal liabilities, and a stronger reputation in both local communities and the broader labor market. Ultimately, reducing workplace accidents boosts public health, stabilizes economic output, and fosters a culture of mutual care and respect among Pennsylvania’s diverse working population.
